Drafting Behind a Semi

Started the day out yesterday by myself. It was a day to ride alone and think about random things. So about 5 miles down route 2 we ran into road work where there was one lane and no sholder. In these situations, we do what is called taking the lane, where you get into a group of at least 4 and you ride two abreast accross the lane so that cars won't pass you. So since I rode alone, this was a slight problem for me. There was a group ahead of me doing this, slowing a tractor trailer down to about 17 mph. I sped up and got right behind it. Tailgating it in any normal circumstance. Now the brilliance of this is I was now sandwiched between two cars ( an SUV ) behind, so I knew they saw me and wouldn't squish me, and I was drafting like no ones business so I barely had to pedal. It was awesome.

Once we got out of the construction zone it was back to the grind. When I got to lunch I ate 3 sandwhiches before teaming up with chris, Michael, steph and Josh to ride the last 20 miles of the day. In the last 2 miles of the day a train was crossing the tracks so we stopped to wait. It then for some reason decided to back up. So we waited some more. When the train disappeared, we were left staring at the only hill in north Dakota. And it wasn't a hill, it was a wall. So we sucked it up and climbed it.

Then I watched part of two movies - breaking away and American flyers...I'll have to finish both sometime.

Stats of the Day

Total Mileage: 65.43

Avg Speed: 16.96

Max Speed: 23.02

  1. please diane. the black hills? May that resound through your memory as a cacophony of Native American sanctity, gold rushes, massacres, and environmental degradation emblazoned with the faces of those responsible for the manifest destiny that has silenced the Lakota, the Buffalo and the ecological integrity of a continent's heart.
